In the two weeks since I last responded to feedback about my manifesto, there have been several other interesting comments. Before I respond to those, I want to make a couple of announcements. First, this Thursday (April 29), I'm presenting the manifesto at SRI's Artificial Intelligence Center at 4pm in MenloPark, California. The talk is free and open to the public. (1E2)
Second, BlueOxenAssociates is once again helping design this June's PlaNetworkConference in SanFrancisco. In addition to the usual lineup of great speakers, including TrueMajority's BenCohen (the "Ben" in Ben & Jerry's), there will be a parallel interactive component. The format will be self-organizing, in some ways resembling OpenSpace, and is being designed by TomorrowMakers (GailTaylor and company) and BlueOxenAssociates. The purpose of the interactive component is to give people some basic infrastructure to discuss and work on topics of interest and also to enable different groups to connect and intertwingle. (1E3)
I want to build on some of the interest that the manifesto has generated, and the PlaNetworkConference offers a perfect venue to do so. I'd like to propose a summit at this June's conference for everyone interested in pursuing greater interoperability between collaborative tools. If you'd like to attend, drop me an email, register for the conference at the web site, and rank the topic. I'll followup later with more details. (1E4)
On to the comments. (1E5)

Last Friday was the last day of ChiliPLoP. OfraHomsky?, JoshRai, LindaRising, JoeYoder, and I met at our usual spot outside of the dining hall for our morning kickoff. We had two items on our agenda: workshop the patterns we had discussed the day before and that Josh and I had written up, and discuss next steps. (1DF)

Last Thursday, my workshop met for a second day. Having agreed on a working definition for collaboration (see Collab:Collaboration), we started working on the PatternLanguage. As was the case the previous day, I knew exactly what I wanted to accomplish, and I made that clear when we got started. What differed this day, however, was that LindaRising, OfraHomsky?, and JoeYoder -- our three experienced PatternLanguage authors -- led the way in terms of process. (1CT)

Today, my workshop began in earnest. My goal for today was to collectively develop a working definition of collaboration, and I'm happy to say that we achieved that (see Collab:Collaboration). Tomorrow, we'll start exploring patterns in earnest. (1BW)

Yesterday afternoon, I arrived in Phoenix, Arizona for ChiliPLoP 2004. I hitched a ride with RalphJohnson and JoeYoder to Carefree, Arizona, and soon found myself at the LutheranRetreatCenter, where the conference is being held. (1BJ)
The post-dinner agenda was to discuss the structure of the conference. Other than the meal schedule (which is strictly enforced), there is no structure. This is what differentiates ChiliPLoP from HillsideGroup's other PLoP conferences. The setting is more relaxed, and the agenda is entirely flexible. (1BK)
Once we got business out of way, the fun began. There were a lot of great conversations, and a few of us stayed up late into the night chatting about everything from PatternLanguages to politics. (1BL)
TomMunnecke got the discussion started by asking about the generativity of PatternLanguages. This is an ongoing beef that Tom has with PatternLanguages, a misunderstanding that's important to clarify. (1BM)

Many thanks to everyone who's emailed me or blogged about my manifesto. I've received great feedback -- lots of kind words and constructive comments -- both via email and the blogosphere. Because of the good folks at SlashDot, the piece was widely distributed. The last time something I wrote was SlashDotted, the responses were mostly content-free. This time around, quite a few people there had something reasonably substantial to say. (1AS)

I recently wrote an essay entitled, "A Manifesto for Collaborative Tools." It outlines a vision for how our tools can and should become more interoperable. (1AQ)
The article is available both on the web and in the May 2004 issue of DrDobbsJournal. I'll also be presenting the paper at SRI's Artificial Intelligence Center on Thursday, April 29 at 4pm in MenloPark, California. The talk is open to the public. (1AR)
