Granular Addressability

The ability to create fine-grained links to pieces of a document is a crucial requirement of the Open Hyperdocument System.

  • Quoting a sentence in a document.
  • Responding to a statement in an e-mail.
  • Categorizing a section of a document.
  • Annotating and revising a document.

You can create links to fine-grained pieces of an HTML document, but only if the author of that document has marked the pieces of that document using the <a name> tag.

Purple numbers offer a standard convention for labeling pieces of an HTML document.
